Origin of the Internet Essay

The Internet as we probably am aware it starts from government-subsidized examination into systems administration advancements with vital applications. Writer and past Internet antiquarian David Hudson (14-16) sees that the ARPANET or Advanced Research Projects Agency Network shaped the specialized spine of what might turn into the Internet. The ARPANET was a correspondences organize in which every hub had equivalent system benefits. The justification behind this decentralized engineering was that paying little mind to which hub on the system would be annihilated, the network’s usefulness would not be undermined. This is maybe what separates the Internet most from different correspondences innovations, and is conceivable because of the advancement of bundle exchanging and TCP/IP which empowered information to be sent spasmodically to dodge the requirement for a devoted information stream. Be that as it may, it was not until the ARPANET was interlinked with the NSFNet in the mid-70s that the term â€Å"Internet† started to accomplish expanding money among organize experts. Moreover, the expanding appropriation by different countries just as colleges and research establishments of TCP/IP allowed the extension of the ARPANET’s major design, successfully expanding the geological inclusion of the rising system. (National Science Foundation 10-12) What genuinely allowed the Internet to incorporate itself into the lives of people past government and research was the ascent of a few applications and conventions that expanded its ‘extracurricular’ potential, most strikingly hypertext. Hypertext inside a PC organizing setting was created by CERN’s Tim Berners-Lee yet was made pervasive by Marc Andreessen’s Mosaic program, which was the main internet browser to increase mass acknowledgment. From that point forward, the Web has become the mainstream face of the Internet. Works Cited Hudson, David. Overhauled. Indianapolis, Indiana: MacMillan Technical Publishing, 1997. Aboba, Bernard. Management complications hence poor performance †Free Samples

Question: Why Management Complications Hence Poor Performance? Answer: Presentation Viable administration doesn't just require a decent comprehension of the authoritative culture and business condition yet in addition the viability with which business objects are imparted (Dattilio and Freeman, 2007). The different procedures, levels of inspiration and relational abilities of the laborers in an association are for the most part imperative in impacting the authoritative achievement (Griffin, 2009). It is in this manner significant for people to grow great individual relational abilities which help one to simple relate and associate with the others at the work environment as well as inside the general public in general. Symptomatic Tools Correspondence Styles Questionnaire I am bad at beginning discussions and dont function admirably with contradictions. I might be very emphatic when the realities in the discussion are in opposition to my qualities, in such cases I display poor listening abilities and continually hop in. I am keen on enabling others and bolster thoughts however get very decisive and passionate particularly when restless or aggravated. Decisiveness Test The consequences of the test uncover me as self-confident and a person who adheres to his perspectives and confidence in close to home estimations. I like to discuss my musings with clearness. I to a great extent have confidence in verbal articulation of thoughts through accentuation on key focuses. I do whatever it takes not to be forceful during discussions yet base my reactions on the mentalities of the others during the discussions. Collaboration and Team Roles Inventory The consequences of the test show the accompanying on my own capacities: I like to grasp new possibilities; I additionally like formulating new strategies for the group. I extravagant cooperation and stay open to communication with other colleagues. I am not impeccable at starting thoughts yet find is simple planning them once started. Johari Window Questionnaire From this test, I concluded number of perspectives as far as correspondence. In the first place, I am sprightly and express my thoughts unquestionably particularly during group elements. I remain quiet during contentions and attempt to talk about my realities from a progressively levelheaded perspective. I face issues intensely and attempt to stay as composed as conceivable when imparting my perspectives. The Big Five Personality Test These test drew out the accompanying angles on my own relational abilities. I like tuning in to new thoughts, and feel very good around individuals. I additionally cause individuals to feel quiet and focus on subtleties. Nonetheless, I get aggravated effectively and have infrequent emotional episodes during which I come up short on the important listening abilities and might be eager as well. Recognized Communication Issues From the aftereffects of the test above, obviously there are number of abilities I may need to chip away at so as to have the option to discuss viably with the others. There is the part of simple disturbance which influences my verbal abilities. I get shut in when troubled and decide to remain quiet which might be deciphered as a forceful non-verbal methodology of correspondence. Besides, I am not a decent audience particularly when not inspired by the topic of conversation. I will in general hop meddling with the speaker which may prompt prejudgment and poor gathering and deciphering of messages. Reflection on ongoing expert Interactions Being another representative in a broadcast communications organization there are various conventions which we must be taken through as a methods for creating abilities and catching the companys culture. One of these methodologies included being relegated to joined explicit gatherings in various offices and getting jobs to help in the new tasks as presented by the division. I was appointed the advertising division and had a ton of challenges streaming with the group particularly during the initial hardly any gatherings. The group chief was very confident and excessively overbearing which caused a great deal of contentions during gatherings. During such warmed circumstances, Id essentially switch off the gatherings and presumably neglect to focus as far as possible. Through this, I missed the conversation of the key focuses and needed to continually ask other colleagues on the following game-plan. A portion of the people discovered this very disturbing. I presently feel I should have been somewhat more patient and proceeded to tune in to the group speakers in spite of my disappointment with the pioneers the executives draws near. The subsequent circumstance was during one of our organization doled out field trips intended to improve great client relations. During these excursions, the representatives were relegated explicit districts in which they were to discover and cooperate with the associations steadfast and forthcoming clients while illuminating them progressively about the companys items and administrations. While a portion of these people were responsive, some of them had disparaging mentalities and scarcely possessed energy for my clarifications. Because of my character, this circumstance effectively got me aggravated consequently influencing my specialized techniques for the remainder of the showcasing binge. I thought that it was hard imparting my musings to them verbally and obviously in light of the fact that I felt wronged by the poor gathering. I currently trust I should have been increasingly adaptable and changed in accordance with the circumstances dependent on the perspectives and approache s displayed by every one of the people I met. In every one of these circumstances, my terrible demeanor influenced compelling gathering of data as given out by the speaker. This additionally impacted the manner in which I imparted my perspectives to the others. Because of the poor listening abilities, I couldnt get the best out of the gatherings which thus influenced my adequacy at work particularly during the execution of the thoughts talked about in the gatherings since I scarcely got a handle on any. Simultaneously, I didnt figure out how to achieve the promoting goals because of the simplicity with which I get passionate and aggravated particularly by poor gathering. It is along these lines a reality significant that I have to deal with these two perspectives notwithstanding different abilities in an offer to be better with regards to the correspondence and gathering of perspectives and thoughts to and from others. Writing Review The reflection above delighted poor listening aptitudes and absence of enthusiastic control as a portion of the obstructions to successful correspondence particularly in a group set up. Johnason (2009) brings up that collaboration includes individuals from various foundations meeting up to seek after a typical target or objective. Accomplishing the authoritative objectives can be a test to an association particularly when the strategies for correspondence inside the group are not sufficiently tended to and overseen. For compelling tasks inside a business substance, it is imperative for individuals to see past the space of their own advantages and henceforth keep up the emphasis on the groups destinations through fitting correspondence draws near. Singular contrasts are among a portion of the fundamental impediments to successful collaboration (Paauwe and Boon, 2009). The subtleties of the test uncover the chance of a breakdown in correspondence when people decide to respect their fee lings to the detriment of the groups interests. Correspondence inside a group set up should be drawn nearer benevolently as this by itself guarantees powerful transmission of data between people in an association (Collings and Wood, 2009). In view of the model of Team works and group inventories, Klerck (2009) brings up that collaboration is an indispensable prerequisite for authoritative achievement. Yet, viable tasks inside a group can be to a great extent hampered by poor relational abilities and approaches. The changing parts of a decent group request that people are committed to utilize their own abilities so as to accomplish the aggregate objectives of the group. In spite of the nearness of battles among the colleagues; the gathering premiums ought to consistently remain the primary concern of core interest. Grasping a positive methodology from each colleague is significant since it upgrades group execution. Be that as it may, singular contrasts in a group to a great extent hamper its development and exercises particularly when these hindrances are not disposed of through successful administration abilities. Confidence is a quality which could be utilized to impart singular duty towards hierarchical objectives ho wever not as a device for tyranny and mastery by pioneers. This is on the grounds that such characters go about as deterrents to the free progression of data and poor gathering. The poor gathering at the departmental gatherings was an aftereffect of wrong disposition to the speakers because of their specialized strategies. Subsequently, group building would be a fundamental measure through which understanding between people could be upgraded prompting better correspondence. Trevisani (2016) through the confusion hypothesis of the board directs a portion of the difficulties toward powerful correspondence because of decent variety at the work environment condition. As placed by this hypothesis, an association is powerless against different changes which on occasion muddle its tasks. Decent variety infers various characters and subsequently varieties in ways to deal with correspondence. Misconceptions, prejudgment and wrong gathering is probably going to happen which lengthens basic procedures, for example, dynamic (Grace and Cohen, 2004). This perspective was clear in our departmental gatherings where people could contend for a considerable length of time because of absence of compelling correspondence. So as to manage the correspondence challenges related with complex gatherings inside associations, it is fundamental for the administration to set up the best techniques that would guarantee a free stream in data starting with one gathering then onto the n ext (Roux, 2007). Contingent upon the idea of the group, the association can pick the most fitting specialized technique for example the utilization of online media or composed correspondence which is both rapid and advantageous. As supported by Merkle (2015), that a group, particularly in an association, is regularly portrayed by contrasts in characters. While a portion of these practices reinforce of a

An entrepreneur needs to ensure that he has shared his expectations openly with his partner and vice versa from the beginning.Impact on your clients: When forming a partnership, it is important to evaluate your value proposition and your key reso urces and make sure your partner is filling any gaps in either. This can only be done by also evaluating how the partnership will translate to the customer.Win-Win situation: For a partnership to be healthy and sustainable, there need to be visible gains on both ends.Selecting partnerships: Some partnerships may seem lucrative in theory but fail to get off the ground practically. In addition, changes in the business context may also make some business partnerships irrelevant. In such cases, it is important to end these partnerships quickly to avoid further wastage of resources. This building block refers to the network of suppliers and partners that make the business model effective. The reasons for a company opting for a partnership are myriad, but healthy partnerships are instrumental in making a business success or a failure. A company can optimize its resource utilization, create new resource streams or mitigate risks behind major business decisions by taking on a partner before starting a new course of action. It is important to note here that your organization maybe partnering with a number of organizations for various reasons, but not all their relationships will be key to your business.Partnerships can change over the course of a business’ lifecycle. The types of partnerships that may be a necessity during year 1 of a start-up will differ significantly from the nature of the required partnership in year 3.Key QuestionsWhen evaluating the various key partnerships that your business requires, it is fruitful to analyze the nature of the partnership based on the following key questions;Which partnerships are critical to our business?Who are our critical suppliers?Which of our suppliers and partners are sourcing our key resources? What type of partnerships would suit our needs? What is the best cluster/ supply chain where I should be located?[slideshare id=41589722doc=businessmodelcanvas-swlisbon14-141115053427-conversion-gate02]TYPES OF PARTNERSPartners and partnerships can be categorized into four different types;Strategic alliances: These types of alliances are between non-competitors. So if you are working through different channels, like a news agency can supply news to both online and offline channels.Co-opetition: There can also be strategic partnerships between partners. Such a partnership will help spread the risk both companies may take. It may also help when both partners are trying to do something new; additionally it could mean a confirmed supply stream. For example, there is a need for earth metals in mobile phones. So securing the supply of rare earth metals could be the reason for competitors to form a strategic partnership.Joint-Ventures: Another thing could be to develop a joint venture in a new business. Both partners could have a mutual interest in developing new business, possibly due to the emergence of a new market or access to a new geographic area. Both organizations will only opt for such an option if they bot h provide some inputs into the business. Hence, a Dutch company that specializes in producing cheese might choose to go into a joint venture with milk producing local company to start making cheese in the new region.Buyer-Supplier Relationships: These are the most common type of partnerships which assures that you have a reliable source of supplies coming in and for your supplier this means they have a steady confirmed buyer for their product.MOTIVATIONS BEHIND PARTNERSHIPSPartnerships are a tricky business involving a lot of negotiation and an element of trust. There can be a number of reasons why organizations would make the decision to take on a key partner rather than doing things themselves or taking on a partner but not considering them as key to the success or failure of their business. Primarily, one of the three kinds of motivations can be attributed when a business chooses to enter a partnership.Optimization and economy of scaleMost organizations are heavily focused on the bottom-line. And many focus on cost-cutting or smart spending through optimizing the allocation of either their resources or activities. This is the most common motivation for people to enter into partnerships of different types. When you are looking for efficiency in your company or optimizing your productions chains, key partners can help you achieve this goal. It is unrealistic to think, as an entrepreneur that you have the resources in place to conduct all your key activities in-house. Most partnerships give organizations the ability to share their infrastructures or outsource some activities to more cost-effective options.Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota joined hands to create a small, cheap car for the masses that they tried to sell for 5000-6000 euros. These cars looked almost the same except for the chassis and a few internal and external details.Reduction of risk and uncertaintyIf you have a good relationship with a key partner, you reduce the inherent risk that comes with doing your own business. You also guarantee supply to your business rather than being dependent on suppliers who aren’t key partners and would therefore not give precedence to your business over others. Many competitors may form strategic partnerships to share the risk of bringing something new into the market while still competing in various aspects in the industry. A classic example of this is the advent of blu-ray technology which was developed in collaboration by some of the world’s premier consumer electronics and computer technology firms. The development of this technology was expensive and several competitors had to get together and decide that they would all be selling their products based on blu-ray technology; hence they needed to collaborate to make blu-ray technology more mainstream. The group joined hands to bring the technology to the mass market but still competes on the basis of their various blu-ray based gadgets in the consumer market.Acquisition of particular resou rces and activitiesIf there are certain things that you don’t have in-house and which would require a heavy investment of time, money or both, a key partner who already has these processes and the infrastructure developed would come in extremely handy.Business models can be extensive maps of the myriad activities that a business needs to perform or the endless resources required to perform these activities successfully. However, it is rare for a new company to have the resources or capabilities in place to fulfill the mandate set down by the business model. Hence, many new companies are beginning their journeys by forming partnerships that give them access to the required resources or processes that they require, but are unable to own yet. Hence, many mobile operators partner with IT companies to develop the operating system their handsets require rather than bearing the heavy investment such an endeavor would require if done in-house. This also gives the IT company a steady sourc e of revenue as well as the advantage of publicity if the mobile manufacturer’s brand is well recognized. Bicycle companies do not manufacture their bicycle accessories. Instead, they get into selective partnerships with bicycle parts manufacturers who customize the parts like the color or size of the bicycle seat according to the preferences of the manufacturer.Heineken is one of the most popular producers and suppliers of beers in the world, and it is especially well-known in the Netherlands, where they have created very strong relationships with bar owners. In fact, Heineken frequently invests in new bars by providing not only equipment for free but also investing in the décor of the bar. In return, the bar provides Heineken beer exclusively. Hence, Heineken gets a repeat customer for their beer while the bar owner can minimize the cost of setting up the business. Conversely, however, the bar owner is limited to selling just Heineken, which means that if Heineken increases the prices of its beers, the bar owner has no choice but to abide by the new prices.KEY PARTNERS AND VALUE PROPOSITIONSFor fast moving consumer goods, availability is key to the success of the company and a major value proposition. For supermarkets and retail chains, distribution partners are key if you want to provide your fast moving consumer goods to the market. Your advantage is that your products will be available to everyone, but the supermarket will drive down your price and resultantly your margins significantly.Technologies are advancing at a very high rate that increases their risk factor is well. However, if the technology forms a significant value proposition for your business, then you can take on a partner to share the risk and cost associated with the technology in question.Focus on where you are creating value but consider that the rest can be outsourced if needed. The activities that are adding value to your value proposition must be outsourced very carefully because t hey are the ones that are key partnerships for your business.CASE STUDY © Entrepreneurial Insights based on the concept of Alex OsterwalderIn this section, you will learn about the next building block in the Business Model Canvas which is Key Partners (or Key Partnerships) that an entrepreneur needs to have to perform its key activities and ultimately provide its value proposition to its customer segment. We will look at 1) key partnerships, 2) types of partners, 3) motivation behind partnerships, 4) key partners and value propositions, and 5) case studies.KEY PARTNERSHIPSA business partnership is when two commercial entities form an alliance, which may either be a really loose relationship where both entities retain their independence and are at liberty to form more partnerships or an exclusive contract which limits the two companies to only that one relationship. The following factors are very important to keep in mind when forming partnerships:Right Partnership Agreements: Whether your partnership is with a business or an individual, it is important fo r all the relevant parties to have clear partnership agreements drafted along with legal counsel.Defining Expectations: Many times new businesses fail to establish their expectations from the outset leading to much confusion and conflict later. This key partnership is a typical buyer-supplier relationship, motivated by a need to acquire key resources. Another key partnership is with specialized coffee machine makers who make specialized coffee makers for Starbucks. Again this helps Starbucks mitigate cost because it does not have to invest in infrastructure, RD, and manpower to create these coffee machines in-house. Instead, it is much more cost effective to partner with an organization that already holds expertise in this area and has the infrastructure in place already to cater to Starbucks’ needs. Conversely, Starbucks provides them with a steady buyer for their product as well as the added boost that the Starbucks brand holds for the coffee machine manufacturer.A Comparative Analysis of Facebook’s and Google’s Partner NetworksThough Facebook has a number of partners in its network, it isn’t entirely dependent on any of these partners. Most of Facebook’s partners provide valuable content for its users so Facebook partners with content providers such as Netflix, Washington Post, Hulu, etc. to provide movies, articles, music and other forms of content to its subscriber base.Conversely, Google has Google Network members who are content companies that partner with Google to provide content on for its search engine. It provides Advertisers access to these content companies web pages through the Google AdSense program and in return shares revenues from the said program with the relevant companies, leading to a mutually beneficial partnership. Additionally Google also partners with Distribution companies to attract traffic to its websites. However, these are a group of Distributors and Google does not leave itself dependent on any one distributor.

How to Keep Your Christmas Tree From Drying Out

Whether you buy your Christmas tree from a lot or hike deep into the woods to cut your own, youll need to keep it fresh if you want it to last the holiday season. Maintaining your evergreen will ensure that it looks its best and prevent potential safety hazards. It will also make cleanup easier when Christmas is over and its time to say goodbye to the tree. Select a Long-Lasting Tree Consider the kind of tree you want. Most  fresh-cut trees, if properly cared for should last at least five weeks before completely drying out. Some species hold their moisture content longer than others. The  trees  that retain moisture the longest are the Fraser fir, Noble fir, and Douglas fir. The Eastern red cedar and Atlantic white cedar rapidly lose moisture and should be used only for a week or two. Whatever type of tree you get, feel the needles to make sure they arent already dry before you take the tree home. Refresh the Tree If youre buying a tree from a lot, odds are the evergreen was harvested days or weeks earlier and has already begun drying out. When  a tree is harvested, the sliced trunk oozes with pitch,  sealing  the transport cells that provide water to the needles. You will need to refresh  your Christmas  tree and open up the clogged cells so the tree can deliver appropriate moisture to the foliage. Using a tree saw, make a straight cut along the bottom of the trunk—taking at least one inch off the original harvest cut—and immediately place the new cut in water. This will improve water uptake once the tree is on its stand. Even if your tree is freshly cut, you should still place the base in a bucket of water until youre ready to bring it inside. Use the Proper Stand The average Christmas tree is about 6 to 7 feet tall and has a trunk diameter of 4 to 6 inches. A standard tree stand should be able to accommodate it. Trees are thirsty and can absorb a gallon of water a day, so look for a stand that holds 1 to 1.5 gallons. Water the new tree until water uptake stops and continue to maintain the level of the stands full mark. Keep the water at that mark through the season. There are dozens of Christmas tree stands for sale, ranging from basic metal models that sell for about $15 to elaborate self-leveling plastic units that cost more than $100. How much you choose to spend will depend on your budget, the size of your tree, and how much effort you want to put into making sure your tree is straight and stable. Keep the Tree Hydrated Always keep the base of your tree submerged in regular tap water. When the stands water remains topped-up, the tree cut will not form a resinous clot over the cut end and the tree will be able to absorb water and retain moisture. You dont need to add anything to the tree water, say tree experts, such as commercially prepared mixes, aspirin, sugar, or other additives. Research has shown that plain water will keep a tree fresh. To make watering your tree easier, consider buying a funnel and a three- to  four-foot  tube. Slip the tube over the funnel outlet, extend the tubing down into the tree stand, and water without bending over or disturbing the tree skirt. Hide this system in an out-of-the-way part of the tree. Practice Safety Keeping your tree fresh does more than maintain its appearance. Its also a good way to prevent fires caused by strings of tree lights or other electric decorations. Maintain all electric accessories on and around the tree. Check for worn Christmas tree light  electrical cords and always unplug the complete system at night. Remember that miniature lights produce less heat than large lights and reduce the drying effect on the tree, which lessens the chance of starting a  fire. Also, keep the tree away from heaters, fans, or direct sunlight to keep it from drying out prematurely. A room humidifier also could help keep the needles fresh longer. Additional safety tips are available from the National Fire Prevention Association. Dispose of the Tree Properly Take the tree down before it dries completely and becomes a fire hazard. A tree that is totally dry will have brittle greenish-gray needles. Be sure to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, and other decor before taking down the tree. Many municipalities have laws dictating how to dispose of a tree; you may have to bag the tree for curbside disposal or drop it off for recycling. Check your citys website for details.

The Effects Of Nutrition On Children s Self Image And...

In todays society, the media increases the public knowledge of young adults or adolescents about things such as healthy diets, looking fit, having that summer body or the abs you desire. It has been identified that this publication of self-concept the way someone â€Å"evaluates or perceives themselves† (Mcleod, 2008) could somewhat be effecting the nutrition of Australian adolescents and possibly having a devastating effects on our society. The Dietitians Association Of Australia states â€Å"good nutrition is critical during the teenage years to ensure healthy growth and development† (2016) however it can be seen that this most likely is not followed by all Australian teenagers, which is a big problem for their health and well being. The Problem of Pedophilia in Modern Society

Pedophilia is described as the act of an adult or a late adolescent (16 years and older) having asexual orientation towards children (14years and below); normally a child who is five years younger than them. Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Problem of Pedophilia in Modern Society specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Production and selling of child pornography is also considered as pedophilic behavior. The individuals who practice these acts are known as pedophiles. Though pedophilia is listed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders) as a mental illness, many scientists beg to differ and campaign for its removal. Many debates have arisen from a number of individuals either in support of pedophilia being in the DSM while others argue vehemently against its inclusion in the DSM like Dr. Richard Green a psychiatrist in the Charing Cross Hospital, London who is an dedicated campaig ner against pedophilia being categorized as a mental disorder (Ahlers et al. 2007). Across many cultures in the world, pedophilia is not considered to be morally wrong. Actually it is encouraged and praised like the Siwans in North Africa consider anal intercourse between men and boys as being an integral part of their living. It is such an important part of their culture that those who don’t practice it are frowned upon in the society. The Aborigines of Central Australia give another example. There, it is allowed for a grown up man who is not yet married to live with a minor (twelve years or below) for the time of his bachelorhood till he gets married. It was seen that sexual relationship between a minor and an adult was beneficial to the child rather than the adult (Ben-Aron, Hucker, Webster, 2003). Dr. Richard Green argues that general personality features and psychopathology studies are influenced and hampered by sampling bias. He further argues that most of the candidat es chosen for research studies are mostly incarcerated individuals and insists that this is not a credible sample of all the pedophiles. This is supported by Finkelhor et al. (1986) when he wrote â€Å"[They are] a small fraction of all offenders, the most flagrant and repetitive in offending, most socially disadvantaged, and least able to persuade criminal justice authorities to let them off† (p. 34). Anxiety disorder and mood swings were also found in about two thirds of the non-incarcerated pedophiles. According to these researches, it is safe to say that pedophiles are generally introverted and hence most of the studies on psychosis and neurosis carried out tend to show the ir levels as slightly elevated but not to a clinically abnormal. Studies on non-pedophiles have also been carried out where 80 â€Å"normal† individuals were studied and questioned about their sexual orientations. They showed that over 25% showed some pedophilic interest when shown pictures of prepubertal children. This study showed penile response of all the 48 soldiers to the adult female pictures, 40 of them for the adolescents and 28 of them to the children between 4 and 10 years. On the flip side, there is another group of individuals who â€Å"enjoy† being pedophiles and even argue that it should be legalized and accepted just like homosexuality. These individuals argue that pedophilia does more good than harm to the child. They have no sense of remorse. These types of individuals are normal and have perfectly normal lives. They engage in pedophilia as a sport. Taking this to account, a big dent is put in the theory that pedophilia is a mental disorder. The Diagn ostic and Statistical Manual for Mental disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association and provides a well packaged and sorted out list of all mental disorders that affect both adults and children. It was first published in 1952 and has been revised a total of five times. Pedophilia has been listed here from the DSM I to DSM IV-TR. In DSM-I pedophilia is listed as a sexual deviation and was labeled â€Å"sociopathic† (went against societal morals), in DSM -II, â€Å"sociopathy† was removed and it became a non-psychotic mental disorders but it still remained as a sexual deviation (Blanchard, Cantor, Robichaud, 2006). In DSM-III pedophilia became a paraphilia. In DSM-III-R pedophilia was categorized as a â€Å"sexual paraphilia†. This categorizing gave rise to the argument that pedophilia was not a mental disorder but a social more. DSM-IV-TR Diagnostic criteria for pedophilia states that; A pedophile is an individual who over a period of six months has recurrent intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger), has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty and has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty. (Blanchard, Cantor, Robichaud, 2006, p. 56)Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Problem of Pedophilia in Modern Society specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is a bit confusing because it only classifies the pedophiles that act on their sexual urges as mentally ill but leaves out the ones who do not. This raises the question as to whether the pedophiles who don’t act on their â€Å"feelings† are mentally ill or not. There are some individuals who argue that pedophilia i s a mental illness and pedophiles should not be condemned but should be treated with understanding and drugs. Traditionally, pedophiles were considered to have been molested or abused in their childhood hence their â€Å"abnormal† sexual orientation. This theory has proven true in the past but there have been a number of researches that have pointed to the contrary. One of this new development shows that pedophilia is indeed a mental disorder. Many individuals have embarked on the process of searching for treatment and a cure for pedophilia. One such individual is Dr. Anthony Siracusa, who treats sexually abused children, argues that pedophiles are regressed offenders. This means that they do not move forward in terms of relationships and they tend to be moving backwards (that is to children) instead of moving towards adults. Dr.Hord also agrees with this and adds that pedophiles are insecure and are often not capable of having intimate relationships with other adults and ke ep moving from one relationship to another. Pedophiles prefer children because they have control over them and they tend to feel more confident among children than among anyone else. According to Dr. James Cantor and his team, pedophiles brains have less white matter. In biology, the white matter is responsible for the thinking process (wiring). These studies were carries out on incarcerated pedophiles. Interesting studies that has been done in this area has indicated that pedophiles generally have lower IQ, are shorter and most of them are left-handed. This might be the reason for their general lack of self esteem. Dr. Cantor insists that the studies carried out are not meant to act as a scapegoat for pedophilia but it is meant to enhance the process of treating and even curing pedophilia. There are a number of theories that try to explain pedophilia. One theory considers pedophilia as paraphilia where it is argued that it mostly affects men since testosterone predisposes men to h aving deviant and queer sexual behaviors. This, however, does not explain the reason for female pedophiles hence this theory is inconclusive.Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Another theory regards pedophilia as a psychological issue. Most researchers argue that pedophiles were sexually abused as children or they have very strained relationships with their parents. Others argue that pedophiles are attracted to children because they never really matured psychologically. They still reason and think like children hence their resultant attraction to children. Another group regard pedophiles behave the way they do as a result of having an urge to control their sexual partners hence their attraction to children. Children are weaker both physically and emotionally than adults. This theory is mostly proven in male pedophiles because most of they crave domination and they don’t seem to achieve that with adult females or males. Researchers supporting this idea argue that pedophilia is an illness like any other and pedophiles should be treated with concern and understanding. In conclusion, human beings have a lot of desires. The society that we live in toda y is full of people with a lot of depraved sexual perversions. Pedophilia is simply one of them. Pedophilia is not in the same level as homosexuality as the latter is considered as sexual interaction between two adults who have willingly accepted to engage in it. For Pedophilia, only the adult has the consent; the child is simply a victim. A pedophile is an adult who knowingly has sexual relations with a child. This means that he/she sits down and hatches a plan on how to â€Å"woo† a child. It is pre-meditated and is certainly not a mental disorder. It is simply an act of satisfying one’s selfish desires and hiding these individuals under the clause â€Å"mental illness† is wrong because we would end up classifying all those individuals from the different cultures in the world as being mentally ill. Pedophilia is not a mental illness and it should be removed from the DSM. References Ahlers, J., Schaefer, A., Mundt, A., Roll, S., Englert, H., Willich, N., Bei er, M. (2007). Democracy in American History essays

Democracy in American History essays There are many events in United Stated history that prove democracy had worked in this country. I researched five different examples in American history where the American people got what they wanted. The five things I choose to discuss are the fight for womans voting rights, Civil rights movement, Prohibition, Education, and Gay and lesbian rights. Winning Suffrage, the right to vote, had been a focus of woman reformers since the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. Woman have tried many things though out American history to gain woman voting rights. Woman have challenged the 14th amendment and pushed for an amendment to let them vote but all this did not work until the 1900s. People like Carrie Chapmen Catt organized committees to help push for the amendment. Finally in 1919 the nineteenth amendment was ratified, after 72 years of work the woman got what they deserved. In the 1873 many people wanted prohibition which is the banning of selling alcoholic beverages. Committees like the Woman Christian Temperance Union founded in 1873 promoted prohibition. But by the mid 1920s only 20 percent of the American people supported prohibition because it increased the crime rate. So in 1933 it was repealed by the 21st amendment. Education was another issue that stirred peoples concern about the future of there children. In 1963 a presidential commission issued a report on education entitled A nation at risk. The report showed American schools scores lagged behind those of other nations schools. It also showed that an average 17 year old could not tell Russia from Florida on a map or fill out a job application. The commission recommended increasing school year , long school days , increase pay for teacher , and emphasis on math and English. Finally in 1991 President bush announced a bold new education initiative called America 2000 which stated that people can choose to send there children to privat...

Tips for Taking Great Cemetery Pictures

Tips for Taking Great Cemetery Pictures Pictures are a wonderful way to document cemeteries and graveyards, from scenic views of the cemetery, to inscriptions of individual tombstones. It isnt always as easy as it seems, however, to achieve sharp, clear photographs of stones that may be centuries old. That old stone may be easy enough to read when youre standing just a few feet away, but capturing its three dimensional carving and inscriptions on a flat picture sometimes takes a bit of work. What to Photograph Its not every day that you get to visit an ancestors cemetery, so take the time, if you can, to create a photographic record of the entire cemetery, rather than just a single tombstone: Take at least two shots of each headstone, one close up so that you can read the inscription, and one from a distance which identifies the markers location in the cemetery. If the gravestone is one of several in a family grouping, then you may also want to take a wide angle shot of the entire family plot (a tombstones position in relation to other family members may provide a clue to relationships).Take several pictures (from different angles) showing the entire cemetery, or at least as large a portion of it as you can fit in a single picture.Unless it is a small family plot hidden in the middle of a cornfield, the front gates or entrance of the cemetery makes another good view to record on film. What Time of Day is Best? Proper lighting is the most critical factor in achieving a good, high-definition tombstone photo. According to tradition, many older cemeteries have individuals buried facing East, which generally means that the inscriptions on the headstones also face East. For this reason, morning light is often the best option in which to obtain the best lighting for photographing tombstones. There are, obviously, many exceptions to this very general rule, however. Tombstones may be situated so that they face the road, a beautiful view, etc. Overhead trees and cloudy days can also make photographing tombstones a difficult task. For this reason, it is best to scout out the cemetery in advance in order to determine the best time of day for taking pictures.   Lighting the Tombstone When optimal lighting is not possible, several tools can be used to reflect light onto shadowy tombstones. Directing sunlight or other light diagonally across the face of a gravestone casts shadows in indentations which makes inscriptions more visible and easy to read: Mirror - A mirror is a common tool for reflecting sunlight onto shadowy tombstones. Mylar (plastic) mirrors are available at most home stores (no reason to risk travelling around with a glass mirror in your car) and can be easily equipped with a set of legs (like an easel) to aid in propping the mirror to effectively reflect sunlight where you need it. Larger mirrors can even be used to reflect sunlight from a distance to light up tombstones resting under shady trees. Collapsible Reflector - A common accessory used by many photographers, a collapsible light reflector can be purchased for about $30-$50. They typically fold up into a small 4-6 package, handy for traveling. Aluminum Foil - A low budget alternative, and handy for travel, aluminum foil makes a decent light reflector in a pinch. Youll either need a piece of cardboard to support the foil, or a partner to hold it for you. Enhancing the Inscription When good lighting isnt enough to bring out a badly eroded inscription, there are a few other methods employed by many genealogists: Water - Wetting down a tombstone with a spray bottle of fresh water can sometimes make carvings stand out much more than when dry. After wetting the stone, allow the surface to dry for a few minutes, leaving the indented lettering damp, which makes it darker and easier to read. Shaving Cream - A method used by many genealogists, shaving cream can do wonders at bringing out hard-to-read inscriptions. This practice is discouraged by most professional conservators, however, as shaving cream contains acidic chemicals and greasy emollients which make it hard to remove from the stone and damaging if left there over time.Black Light - Suggested by some, a black light bulb (75 watt or higher) can be used to make a worn inscription pop out. While an extension cord may be a problem in many cemeteries, you can find portable, battery-operated black light units in many party or novelty stores (they are especially popular around Halloween). Cast the light directly on the tombstone and the words j ust seem to pop right out at you. Black light works especially well when it is dark, but since cemeteries are not always the safest place to visit at night, try draping a large, dark blanket over both you and the tombstone while using the black light. This should create enough darkness for a very illuminating inscription.

A number of different background factors have been seen to affect Essay

A number of different background factors have been seen to affect successful performance in Higher Education (HE). Identify one - Essay Example Age of students is yet another factor which has been found to be highly correlated with students’ performance in undergrad programs (Barrow et al., 2009). In the context of institutions whose population is skewed towards mature adult students, there is a strong linkage between the percentage of mature students and their non-completion percentages (Barrow et al., 2009). The main reason for this the diversity of entry routes employed by these students when they enroll into an undergrad program (Barrow et al., 2009). Interestingly, mature strata of students are found to have achieved better grades than their non-mature counterparts. Similarly, the relationship of socio-economic class and ethnicity with entry route also presumes much importance in research literature (Barrow et al., 2009). This is attributed to lower standards of pre entry qualifications of ethnic minorities, particularly those from overseas. There is, however, a large section of this relationship that remains une xplained. Perhaps, one of the most significant factors affecting higher education is gender. Research demonstrates that a larger percentage of female undergraduate students successfully achieve ‘good’ degrees (either a first or a II: i) compared to their male counterparts (Barrow et al., 2009).

Gender Normativity in Aurora Floyd; How Variances in Gender Behavior Essay

Gender Normativity in Aurora Floyd; How Variances in Gender Behavior Illustrate Societal Norms - Essay Example It is more likely, however, that Aurora's childhood was the primary influencer of her unfeminine behavior. At the loss of her mother, Aurora was allowed to do anything she pleased, as long as she was happy. Indeed She said what she pleased; thought, spoke, acted as she pleased; learned what she pleased; and she grew into a bright, impetuous being, affectionate and generous-hearted as her mother, but with some touch of native fire blended in her mould that stamped her as original. (Bradden 9) Without the careful training that young girls of the era received, Aurora was unable to succumb to traditional femininity. She read novels with inappropriate content, new of horse racing and betting, spent long days on horseback, and was quick to say what she thought. She was a strong, independent young lady, the exact opposite of what was desired in a woman! exactly the sort of woman to make a good wife. She had been educated to that end by a careful mother. Purity and goodness had watched over her and hemmed her in from the cradle. She had never seen unseemly sights, or heard unseemly sounds. She was as ignorant as a baby of all the vices and horrors of this big world. She was ladylike, accomplished, well-informed. (Bradden 21) Lucy was quiet and calm and good, willing to suffer for her husband and willing to do as she was told. As a model of femininity, she is perfect. There could be no recourse against her. However, it is her very perfection in femininity that makes her less noticeable by the men in the story. While Captain Bulstrode believes she would make an ideal wife, he also ponders the idea that "There are so many Lucys, but so few Auroras; and while you never could be critical with the one, you were merciless in your scrutiny of the other" (Bradden 21). Because she is perfect, it is impossible to fall in love with her, because of an internal fear that the man's own imperfections will be clearer next to her. While she is what should be desired in a wife, it is the wild Aurora that catches men's attentions; with her boldness and imperfection. These two young women represent two very different personalities. Aurora, who has everything, but still maintains the wildness and lower class lifestyle that her mother had, and Lucy, who has modest wealth, but has been raised to be the perfect specimen of femininity. Even their coloring matches the ideals. Aurora is dark haired and dark eyed, and was "a good hater" (Braddon 12). Lucy was fair haired and blue eyed, the Victorian ideal of beauty. Aurora, throughout the novel, acts and does precisely what she wants. However, even she is not able to make all her own choices. By force, she is sent to finishing school in Paris, and then has to endure a woman meant to help polish her when she returns. Lucy, who has the feminine graces, did not have to endure these actions, but instead has to endure the pain of being overlooked by the man she loves, as she can be nothing but

The Exchange of Information Essay -- Internet Communication Technology

The Exchange of Information The Internet is a telecommunications superhighway, a collective data of information for corporations, government institutions, private individuals, and universities. This branch of roads leads into nearly every corner of the globe. The superhighway, picks up potential travelers from far away places, exotic destinations, and interesting people. The internet can transport you from one major destination to another quickly, then it also can detour you into a leisurely exploration. Like a superhighway, the internet carries holiday and family traffic. Also traveling are both people who know precisely where they are going and those who are wandering. Government, educational, and business institution are also frequent travelers of the internet. In brief, the internet is an open road for anyone interested in a journey or for users who need a quick shortcut across the country. Information and communication are the main resource pools for the internet. The internet provides information, the raw data for which we need knowledge to decode or understand. Looking at the internet as a source of information leads us to ask if this information is a commodity. According to Webster's Dictionary, a commodity is an article of trade or commerce which holds a value and use, especially a product distinguished from a service, like the internet. The internet provides wide variety of information to enhance our knowledge. This information matches this description of commodity because of the benefits being exchanged through this modern technology. Therefore, the internet represents the commodification of information through the commercial, private, and government sector of our economy. Physics in Light- Intensity

Investigations in Light Intensity Change through Angular Displacement Guiding Question How does the intensity of light change as the angle of incidence to the light source increases? Prediction of Results Predict what you think will happen and what type of equation and graph might best fit the data representing the intensity of a light as the angle of incidence increases. Objective After completing this lesson, a student should be able to analyze light intensity striking a surface at varying angles of incidence.Materials CBL, TI-83 Plus calculator, light sensor, lamp with light bulb (60 to 100 watts), tape measure, Scotch tape (or similar), protractor, sheet of paper, ANGLE program, daily log Vocabulary the normal angle of incidence periodic sinusoidal regression Introduction You have completed an investigation of light intensity changes with varying distance. You will continue investigating intensity changes, but now you will note the change of intensity as light strikes a surface t hrough increasing angles of incidence. As Figure 1 indicates, the angle of incidence is the angle at which light strikes a surface. The normal is an imaginary line perpendicular to the plane on which light strikes. The angle of incidence is the angle between the normal and an incident (that is, an incoming) light ray. Angle of incidence Normal Incident Light Ray Figure 1 As the angle of incident light increases, is it more reasonable to think that its intensity increases or decreases? As you think about this question, consider whether you are more likely to get a sunburn in the late evening when the sun is low on the horizon greater incidence angle) or at noon time when the sun is more overhead (smaller incidence angle), as sketched below? Is it usually hotter at noon or in the late evening? Evening Sunlight Noon Sunlight If you suspect that intensity decreases with increasing angle of incidence, you are on the right track. Assuming for the moment, then, that the light intensity (I) decreases as the angle of incidence (a) increases, we can say the relationship between intensity and incidence angle are inversely proportional over the angles involved. But you may note that as the sun rises through the morning and then sets toward the evening, its angle of incidence decreases, reaches a minimum at noon, and then begins to increase again into the evening. That is, the incidence angle starts at sunrise at a maximum of 90Â °, decreases to a minimum until noon (near the equator it decreases to 0Â °, but not in Alaska), and then increases back to a maximum to 90Â ° at sunset. You can see that this cycle repeats itself time and again: the incidence angle begins at a maximum, then decreases to a minimum, increases to a maximum, and so forth. Figure 2a below shows just such a cycle. Intensity, however, changes as the inverse of the incidence angle, so is represented in the Figure 2b cycle. Morning Noon Evening Figure 2a – Changing Incidence Angle Morning Noon Even ing Figure 2b – Changing Light Intensity This cycle of repeating events is called periodic and you might recognize the curves as sine waves. Here is an equation that describes intensity as a sine wave: I = sin(a) (intensity is proportional to the sine of the incidence angle, a). It is important to remember in this comparison that the angle with respect to the sun will always be between 90Â ° and 0Â °. This means that if we determine one quarter of the period (or cycle), then we can know through regression analysis what the rest of the curve should look like. You will complete an investigation that does exactly this: determine the intensity of a light as the angle of incidence changes from 0Â ° to 90Â °.
